As part of the Lower Don Valley Flood Defence Project, we hosted a volunteer day at Hadfield Weir, Meadowhall on Sunday 19th February to remove debris left from recent high water. Since before Christmas, debris had been jammed against the top of the weir and fish pass. Despite looking unsightly in such a high-profile area, it also comprises a potential flood risk. We worked alongside local volunteers and Sheffield Hallam University Canoe Club to carry out the work, trialling a low-cost, creative model to remove debris in difficult-to-access areas of the river.
Business Liaison Coordinator at Sheffield Chamber of Commerce Clare Maguire praised the efforts of staff and volunteers: “Thanks to all who gave their time voluntarily to clear this unsightly debris. A great example of partnership working to reduce the flood risk for Sheffield and enhance the river environment and which reflects the collaborative nature of our unique project.”
