River Ramblings: Ivy League Goats

River Ramblings: Ivy League Goats

We have recently come up with a goat-ally ameheh-zing ‘waste not want not’ solution to the River Stewards’ green waste disposal needs and Heeley City Farm’s hungry ungulate desires- give the ivy to the goats!

Working with the Canal and River Trust this winter, RSC have been removing sections of overgrown ivy from heritage structures along the Sheffield – Tinsley towpath to protect them from damage and collapse.

Our friends at Heeley City Farm; a local, community-focused charity with an environmental visitor centre in the heart of the city, recently helped us to tackle the green stuff during one of our fortnightly volunteer days on the canal.

Sarah Wild, the aptly named Animal Development and Education Worker at the farm was overjoyed with the prospect of complimentary nibbles for her four-legged friends, and the benefit was mutual as this provides us with a sustainable, environmentally-friendly method of ‘recycling’ our waste.

As a social enterprise, working with local groups is invaluable and collaborating with such a great charity provides great scope for the future.
