Site Operative

Job Title: Site Operative
Salary: £7.70 per hour
Hours: Zero-hours
Location: Site-based
Annual Leave: 34 days pro rata (including statutory bank holiday days). Holiday is accrued based on the hours worked and paid each month on top of the basic wage.

River Stewardship Company (RSC) was established by a group of public and third sector partners including Sheffield City Council, Groundwork Sheffield and Sheffield Wildlife Trust. With the continued support of the founding partners the company has developed expertise in waterway habitat management and community involvement, delivering a holistic and sustainable approach to managing waterway issues.

Purpose of the job

RSC are looking to recruit an experienced, knowledgeable site operative to make up our site-based contract delivery team. The Site Operative will contribute to the successful delivery of a range of waterway management contract days across Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire involving tasks such as: invasive species control; felling and maintaining trees; planting trees, shrubs and other flora; habitat creation; fencing and the erection of ancillary structures; litter and debris management. The Site Operative may assist in the organisation of tasks, including writing risk assessments, attending site visits, researching and ordering materials and maintaining relevant health and safety, quality and environmental records. The Site Operative will be responsible to the Senior Site Supervisor, working closely with volunteers and other community interest organisations as well as with clients and sub-contractors. The Site Operative will also work with the partners and stakeholders involved with the RSC.

The post holder will also be expected to assist the team as a site operative as and when required. The Site Supervisor will oversee and contribute in the successful delivery of a range of waterway management contract days across Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire involving tasks such as: invasive species control; felling and maintaining trees; planting trees, shrubs and other flora; habitat creation; fencing and the erection of ancillary structures; litter and debris management. Voluntary River Stewards

Hours: Flexible working hours offered around other commitments; but 2/3 days per week would be preferred
Duration of post: 9 months

Location: River Stewardship Company office/tool store and Yorkshire’s waterways

An exciting opportunity to be a key part of an innovative social enterprise delivering watercourse maintenance projects and community engagement in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire. We are recruiting on a rolling basis and are ideally looking for a commitment of 9 months or more, for 2 or 3 days a week; but we can be flexible as per the applicant’s other commitments and responsibilities.

The post represents an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience for a career in the conservation sector. All reasonable travel and subsistence expenses will be reimbursed and the successful applicants will receive accredited training in first aid, water and flood awareness, pesticide application and other machinery training, in line with our work programme.

Purpose of the job

The Voluntary River Steward will assist in the delivery of a variety of waterway maintenance tasks and habitat improvements on Yorkshire’s waterways. The successful post holder will gain experience in tasks including: felling, coppicing and pollarding trees; planting trees, shrubs and other flora; habitat creation such as the erection of kingfisher perches and otter holts; fencing and the erection of site furniture and interpretation; invasive species control and litter and debris management within the river channel, banks and riverside footpaths. There will also be an opportunity to assist in the delivery of a variety of community engagement activities, such as running practical volunteer days, waterway-related and environmental workshops in schools and guided walks.
